Lost Pond – Not Really Lost

Elevation: 1553 ft

Ascent: 210 ft

Distance: 1.4 or 2.6 miles

Location: Near entrance of Putnam Pond State Campground.

     

The trailhead for Lost Pond is along the road to Putnam Pond campground at the edge of the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness.  It is the last trailhead accessible along this road in which you don’t have to pay to enter the campground in order to get to. 

The 1.4 miles trail leads to a picturesque pond which is a favorite of fishermen. The reasonably easy trail is a good outing for families with young children.  When the trail first arrives at the north end of the pond, it splits into a loop around the pond.  The trail to the left leads in a short distance to one of the few good places to sit on grass or rocks on the edge of the pond for a rest and maybe a little lunch.  In this direction the trail leads on down the east side of the pond at the base of Abes Hill whose steep sides make this part of the trail a bit of a scramble among, around and over rocks.  From the south end on around the pond the trail has much easier footing.  The view (above) is from the southern most bay of the pond.  From there it was an easy walk back to the start of the loop having added 1.2 miles to the hike in.
