Ascent: 1280 ft

Distance: 2.1 miles

Location: Off Route 9 in south of exit 33 of Northway (I87).

Access to the trailhead is south on Route 9 off Exit 33 of the Northway. (There is an original trail from the state campground which is a very steep climb of 1,280 feet in 1.2 miles.)

View from Poke-O-Moonshine

The trail is a very pleasant old woods road with a steady uphill grade. In about a half mile it passes a beautiful beaver pond on the left. It then passes a lean-to and the remains of the fire observer`s cabin. There is a large seemingly indestructible stone chimney to gawk at. Beyond this point the climb increases in grade towards the fire tower summit. There is great lookout ledge on the left, which has a magnificent view of Whiteface Mountain.  There are also fine views out to the east as you can clearly see Camel`s Hump and Mount Mansfield in Vermont and Lake Champlain sparkling in the foreground. The tower has been restored and is worth climbing for even better views north and south.
