The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) seeks hospitality/culinary facilities professional to manage the ADK Heart Lake Program Center’s overnight accommodations and facilities including the Adirondak Loj, rental cabins, and campground in the High Peaks Wilderness Area of the Adirondack Park.
Responsibilities: Responsible for the efficient operation of Adirondak Loj, rental cabins, and campground at the Heart Lake Program Center. Supervise the overnight security of the property facilities and campground. Work with the JBL Coordinator to insure that JBL, Camp Peggy O’Brien, Grace Camp, and JBL lean-tos are clean, are well maintained and run efficiently. Coordinate with Food Service Supervisor and Front Desk Supervisor to develop and implement efficient operating procedures that are cost effective and provide a high quality of service. Promote a positive and service oriented attitude among North Country and Front Desk staff. Assist and coordinate with interviewing, hiring and evaluation of facilities staff. Oversee supervision and training of staff in housekeeping, kitchen, and front desk procedures. Encourage a friendly welcoming atmosphere at the lodges and promote positive relations with the local community. Develop annual budgets and provide monthly financial oversight.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in hospitality, food service, business, accounting, management, or any related field. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of guests, members, and staff. Proven ability to plan independently, organize, schedule, coordinate, and make decisions and judgments relating to assigned responsibilities. Experience in budget development and management; proven ability to work independently and as a team member; excellent communication and organizational skills; proficiency with point of sale systems, accounting and reservations software, spreadsheets, and databases.

The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) seeks maintenance/facilities professional to oversee and manage maintenance functions of Adirondack Mountain Club’s (ADK) North Country facilities and properties in the High Peaks Wilderness Area of the Adirondack Park.
Responsibilities: Overall responsibility for maintenance functions of ADK’s North Country properties. Maintain preventative maintenance schedules on all equipment, buildings and grounds. Strive to make ADK North Country properties a showcase for environmentally sound land management and conservation practices. Oversee North Country facilities’ physical plant, troubleshoot problems, and schedule routine maintenance and repair of systems. Provide for regular maintenance of all equipment, roadways, grounds, and built structures. In coordination with the ADK team, develop a list of priority projects and secure estimates. Manage maintenance budget, materials ordering and inventory control. Develop budgets for routine maintenance tasks and special projects and complete within budgets. Hire, supervise, and evaluate maintenance staff. Perform project planning and contracting of capital initiatives. Coordinate volunteer work weekends. Recruit, supervise and promote the use of volunteers. Coordinate with outside contractors to accomplish tasks beyond the scope of the ADK team.
Qualifications: Experience in maintenance, construction, and general contracting. Strong project planning background. Demonstrated success recruiting, motivating, coordinating, and supervising staff, volunteers, and contractors. Willingness to work long days and weekends with staff and volunteers, both in the field and office. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of volunteers and staff. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) seeks hard working, friendly individuals to staff the High Peaks Information Center (HPIC), located at our Heart Lake Program Center in the Adirondack High Peaks Region. HPIC staff interact directly with the many visitors to the area, providing trail information, trail conditions updates, weather information, and safety alerts. The renting of equipment and merchandise sales also fall under the responsibilities of HPIC staff. In addition, staff may be called upon to act as a liaison between our visitors and the backcountry forest rangers, facilitating communication of critical information to the rangers during search and rescue operations. Parking fee collection, general facilities upkeep, promoting the ADK mission, and promoting membership in the ADK are also staff responsibilities.

The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) seeks hard working, friendly individuals to staff the Heart Lake and Johns Brook Lodge program centers located in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains near Lake Placid, NY. North Country Operations Crew is a diverse position with an emphasis on housekeeping and wait staff, other duties may include food preparation, hiker education, information services, campground maintenance, parking, and promoting ADK membership.
Some positions require the ability to pack heavy loads (50 lbs or more) for hikes of 5 miles to a backcountry location, working with equipment/machinery, orientation and training provided, on-site housing with room and board available for a small deduction. The lodges are both in great locations in the Adirondack High Peaks with incredible hiking, paddling, climbing, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Qualifications: Previous experience working in hospitality, retail, or customer service. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, motivated, enthusiastic, and willing to sometimes work long hours. Candidates must be comfortable in a teamwork environment and with shared coed living quarters. Knowledge of Leave No Trace and the Adirondacks very helpful but not required. Love of the outdoors a must!

Front desk and reservations employees welcome guests to ADK’s Heart Lake facility and the Adirondak Loj, a rustic 38-space lodge in the heart of the High Peaks Region of New York State. Responsibilities include facility and program reservations, check-in and check-out procedures and answering telephone, and in-person inquiries. Positions open year-round.
Qualifications: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills a must. Detail orientated with an ability to juggle multiple tasks. Knowledge of the High Peaks region helpful.

The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is a paid seasonal employee of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s principal partner in the maintenance and reconstruction of backcountry trails on Forest Preserve lands. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader is responsible for working with, educating, supervising and motivating volunteers. Crews live and work in a backcountry setting. Using basic hand tools, a wide variety of trail stabilization structures are constructed using native materials. Approximately half of the trail projects in a given season are specifically for high school age participants. The Volunteer Trail Crew Leader should provide for a safe, positive, and educational volunteer experience while accomplishing the highest quality trail work possible.
Qualifications: Applicants should have prior experience leading and teaching groups of all ages in a wilderness setting and have trail work experience while keeping an open mind to learn new trail construction/maintenance techniques. Candidates should have an exceptional ability to motivate and engage volunteers under adverse conditions (i.e. insects, mud, poor weather, and difficult group dynamics) and the capability to keep a positive attitude while supervising a group to accomplish the task at hand. Applicants should have experience backpacking and the capacity to carry tools and supplies for a long distance. Candidates should have a current first aid certification and knowledge of low-impact camping techniques.

The Adirondack Mountain Club’s professional trail crew conducts maintenance and rehabilitates backcountry trails in both the Adirondack and Catskill parks. Using basic hand tools, a wide variety of trail stabilization structures are constructed. The crew camps for a week at a time nearby work locations. Training is provided prior to the field season.
Qualifications and Responsibilities: Applicants should have experience using trail building tools and be familiar with trail reconstruction/maintenance techniques. Candidates should have the desire to be both physically and mentally challenged while working in the out-of-doors in extreme conditions, to include but not limited to rain, snow, sleet, gales, hot and cold temperatures, insects and lots of mud! Candidates should have the desire to work on solo trail projects and as a team member on a 4-6 person crew.
Applicants should have experience backpacking with ability to carry a heavy load for a long distance. Crew members share in the packing of group camping gear, tools and food, along with personal gear to the various project sites and assist in food preparation. Crew members are responsible for maintaining trail tools, equipment and the trail cabin facility to the highest standard.

ADK is seeking a dynamic individual for the position of Seasonal Wilderness Trip Leader. The Wilderness Trip Leader has primary responsibility for leading wilderness courses and trips for the Adirondack Mountain Club in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Park, as well as instruction of ADK’s Outdoor Education workshops focused on responsible recreational use and environmental stewardship.
Responsibilities: The Wilderness Trip Leader will spend 3-4 days leading backpacking and hiking trips in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Instruct high quality outdoor skills programs for adults and youth - including but not limited to backpacking, canoeing, and wilderness leadership, and other workshops/ programs as necessary. Provide accurate and timely program follow-up with specific records of participants, and expenses. Maintain a log of equipment use for programs. Have the ability to fill in for/assist education staff as needed.
Qualifications:
College student or graduate with degree in related field.

The Summer Naturalist Internship with ADK is an excellent opportunity to learn and gain experience creating and conducting natural history programs, promoting responsible recreation and Leave No Trace; and environmental education programs for children and adults. Intern assumes a diversity of responsibilities including: serving as a summit host on Mt. Jo; developing environmental education and evening campfire program; public presentations; guided hikes; community outreach; development and maintenance of self-guided trails; managing and staffing the Heart Lake Natural History Museum; and exhibit development. Opportunities for special projects in exhibit design; flora/fauna inventory; interpretation; outdoor recreation; and visitor studies.
Qualifications
Educational background in the natural sciences, environmental education/interpretation, natural history, or related field.
Previous experience working in a nature/visitor center; outdoor recreation; or education.

High Peaks summit stewards are responsible for educating the hiking public about the rare and fragile alpine communities of the Adirondack High Peaks Region in New York State. In addition, summit stewards are responsible for conducting biological inventories and monitoring for the New York Natural Heritage Program; and alpine restoration. Stewards spend five days at a time camping in remote backcountry sites and complete strenuous hikes each day to a nearby summit. The Summit Steward Program is a cooperative effort of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New York State Natural Heritage Program.
Qualifications: BS/graduate work in natural sciences; environmental interpretation/education; ecology; botany; or related field. Work experience in field research; environmental interpretation/education; living in remote backcountry settings; and working with diverse populations. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Applicants should have knowledge of natural history, alpine ecology, botany, and of the Adirondack landscape. French language ability and wilderness first aid preferred. Applicants must have a strong desire to be challenged physically and mentally, while working in the remote backcountry in extreme conditions.
