GPS 101

This course will provide an introduction to Global Positioning Systems. We’ll discuss how GPS works, including coordinate systems and other associated terminology, and explain the uses and limitations of GPS. Throughout the course, we’ll go outside and conduct field exercises to solidify our new skills.

Map & Compass Fundamentals
Heart Lake Program Center, Mar. 22
This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, identification of terrain features, compass use, and triangulation. Once learned, these skills will enable participants to feel more confident with backcountry travel.
Cost: $63/$69; includes instruction and use of equipment.
Map & Compass Bushwhack Heart Lake Program Center/Field
Dates: May 3-4, 2008
November 15-16, 2008
This course is a great refresher or a good place to learn the basics of map and compass skills. The first day will be an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, compass use, triangulation, and identification of terrain features. On day two, participants will put their newfound skills to the test with a half-day guided bushwhack in the Heart Lake area. You’ll go home with much more confidence in your ability to use a map and compass when it really counts!
Cost: $100/$110; includes instruction and use of equipment.
Adirondack Hike & Draw w/ Sheri Amsel

Come join Adirondack Illustrator, Sheri Amsel, for a day of hiking, observing nature, identifying species, and drawing them! Learn to draw wildflowers, trees, insects and birds. Finish out the day by drawing a bird of prey. Sheri Amsel is the author/illustrator of more than 20 books on natural history topics, including the Adirondack Nature Guide.

Wildflower Weekend w/ Ruth Schottman Heart Lake Program Center/Field
Date: May 17-18, 2008
Intended for beginner wildflower enthusiasts, or those who are looking for a review, this workshop will familiarize participants with Adirondack wildflowers. Led by renowned expert Ruth Schottman, author of Trailside Notes, we will study botanical structures, relationships among plants and various environmental factors as well as identification and use of field guides.
Cost: $70/$77; includes instruction and use of equipment.

Adirondack Packbaskets I & II HLPC / MSC

Create your own traditional Adirondack Packbasket with the owners of Clear Creek Weavers, Bud Ziolkowski and Sandy Muller. During this full-day course, skilled craftsmen will take you through the step-by-step instruction to weave your own packbasket from start to “skids”. You’ll leave at the end of the day with a beautiful basket and a smile on your face!
