Oct. 1

Moderate Day Hike: Jay Range

Get off on the right foot with a Beginner Day Hike and learn the ropes from a seasoned professional guide. A guided trip to the summit of the Jay Range (7.5-miles; elev. 3,600 ft.) will provide the foundation of skills and knowledge necessary to fully enjoy your future outings.  We’ll discuss safe low-impact travel, map reading, equipment, nutrition, and more, including the rich natural history of the Adirondacks.

Oct. 8

Trailless Peak Day Hikes: Table Top Mt.

Uncomfortable approaching “trailless” high peaks on your own? These one-day courses will introduce you to the nuances of hiking off-trail through a guided trip to the summit of Table Top Mt. (elev. 4,427 ft.). We’ll discuss safe low-impact travel, route selection, off trail navigation, and the rich natural history of the Adirondacks.

Cost: $59/$65; includes instruction.

Trailless Peak Day Hike: Street and Nye

Uncomfortable approaching “trailless” high peaks on your own? These one-day courses will introduce you to the nuances of hiking off-trail through a guided trip to the summits of Street and Nye (elev. 4,166 ft. & 3,895 ft.). We’ll discuss safe low-impact travel, route selection, off trail navigation, and the rich natural history of the Adirondacks.

Location: Heart Lake Program Center

Cost: $59/$65; includes instruction.

Oct. 15-16

Leave No Trace Trainer 

The Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program. Participants receive introductory training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format. The Trainer Course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.

Location: Heart Lake Program Center/Field

Cost: $85/$95, includes instruction, meals, and use of group gear.

Oct. 22

Map and Compass Fundamentals

A great refresher course or a good place to learn the basics of map and compass skills.  This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, identification of terrain features, compass use, and triangulation.  You’ll go home with much more confidence in your ability to use a map and compass when it really counts!

Location: Heart Lake Program Center/Field

Cost: $59/$65; includes instruction and use of materials.

Oct. 22-23 

Wilderness First Aid

This intense course with Wilderness Medical Associates teaches students how to deal with medical emergencies when they are miles from help. The classes offer hands-on scenarios and lecture structure, through which students will learn to assess patients and become certified in wilderness first aid, CPR, and anaphylaxis training. Class time will be spent both inside and out.

Cost: $235 includes instruction and materials. 

Package: $320 includes instruction, materials, meals, and lodging for 2 nights.
