Snowshoeing/Cross-Country Skiing

Check back in the fall for 2011 snowshoeing and cross-country skiing programs. Below are some of the programs we offered in winter 2010. Note that prices are 2010 prices and are subject to change.

Beginner Backcountry Skiing: Fish Pond Truck Trail

Are you a cross-country skier who wishes to move out of groomed cross-country ski areas, develop your technique, and expand your experience into the backcountry on varied terrain?  Then this is the course for you! This introductory backcountry ski workshop will help you gain an understanding of the equipment and technique needed to ski on un-groomed surfaces.  Program is for ages 16 and older.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $55/$60, includes instruction.  With equipment rental: $85/$90.

Introduction to Backcountry Snowshoeing

Our Intro to Snowshoeing program is a great way to experience the freedom and fun of snowshoeing.  We’ll spend a full day snowshoeing in the beautiful High Peaks Wilderness.  Our focus will be on learning about safe winter travel and some basic techniques that will increase your enjoyment of this activity.  Your instructor will also share bits of natural history such on topics such as animal tracking and winter ecology.  This program is suited for adults and children 12 and older.
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $40/$44 adults, $15/$17 kids 12-15.  Includes instruction and snowshoes.

Beginner Backcountry Skiing: Adirondak Loj

Are you a cross-country skier who wishes to move out of groomed cross-country ski areas, develop your technique, and expand your experience into the backcountry on varied terrain?  Then this is the course for you! This introductory backcountry ski workshop will help you gain an understanding of the equipment and technique needed to ski on un-groomed surfaces. Program is for ages 16 and older.

Cost: $55/$60; includes instruction.  With equipment rental: $85/$90.

Family Snowshoe Day

Join ADK at the beautiful Heart Lake Program Center for a day of snowshoeing on our wonderful trails.  We will provide the snowshoes and instruction for these guided hikes around our property, as well as sharing bits of natural history including animal tracking and winter ecology. Hikes may include climbing Mt. Jo or snowshoeing to a lean-to to enjoy hot chocolate and the incredible scenery of the High Peaks. Great for the whole family! 

Time: 10 AM-3 PM. 
Location: Heart Lake Program Center
Cost: $30/$35 adult, $10/$12 kids 6-15, free for kids under 6. Includes instruction and snowshoes.

Adirondack Classic Ski Tours: Raquette Falls

This is a wonderful ski along the Raquette River to Raquette Falls with a variety of forest types and rolling terrain. This area often has better snow conditions than areas closer to the High Peaks. Groomed only by skis and Mother Nature, the trail offers backcountry conditions as it passes through a wide range of habitats and terrain. This trip is 9 miles of ungroomed, rolling terrain with a difficulty rating of Intermediate.

Adirondack Classic Ski Tours: Avalanche Pass

With spectacular scenery of the High Peaks, towering cliffs, and Avalanche Lake, this is one of the most beautiful ski routes in the area - truly a classic trip. Groomed only by skis and Mother Nature, the trail offers backcountry conditions as it passes through a wide range of habitats and terrain. The total distance is 10 miles of ungroomed, rolling to hilly terrain with a difficulty rating of Intermediate-Advanced.

Adirondack Classic Ski Tours: Whiteface Landing

Beginning at Connery Pond, this ski is mellow enough for those with novice abilities, but still challenging enough for those with a bit more experience.  Groomed only by skis and Mother Nature, the trail offers backcountry conditions as it passes through a wide range of habitats and terrain.  The total distance is 6 miles of ungroomed, flat to rolling terrain with a difficulty rating of Novice.
