The ADK Hiking Page
Since 1922, the Adirondack Mountain Club has been the authority on hiking in the Adirondacks. ADK’s Hiking Page is your source for a wealth of information about Adirondack hiking and backpacking, as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter.
DEC Warns of Avalanche Danger in the Adirondack Back Country
Late Winter/Early Spring Conditions: Unseasonably warm weather has resulted in a significant loss of snow cover. Trails in lower elevations and on southern slopes may have little or no snow. Nighttime temperatures below freezing can result in hard trails in the morning (snow or bare ground), but these trails are often muddy and wet or soft snow by afternoon. Hikers should be prepared for all of these conditions by continuing to carry and use snowshoes, skis and/or crampons as warranted. Also wear waterproof footwear and gaiters and remember to walk through -- not around -- mud and water on trails.
Winds and wet heavy snow from winter storms have caused substantial amounts of blowdown. Downed limbs and branches may be found on some trails, particularly lesser used side trails.
