Owl’s Head – A Great First Hike for Children

There are a number of Owl’s Head Mountains. The one I mean is off of NY Route 73 between the eastern end of the Cascade Lakes and the town of Keene some 3.2 miles above Keene. The turn-off is marked with something about Owl’s Head but is not marked by a DEC trailhead sign. Follow the gravel road 0.2 miles to a T intersection and then turn left and park in any available spot. The trail leaves the road across from the left corner of intersection. It is a great trail for children because even though it is steep in places, you will arrive at lookouts all along the way. The whole ascent is only 460 feet in 0.6 miles. I took my older granddaughter (along with her Mom) up during her 5th year. There were many other folks on the trail who were kind enough to encourage Hannah and compliment her on her achievement. The peak has the added attraction of being a beginners rock climbing area, so if you are lucky you may get to watch rock climbing classes.

NOTE: For a more complete description of the trail, please see ADK's (guide to) ADIRONDACK TRAILS - High Peaks Region 13th Edition, pp 166.

Hope you have a great hike!
