ADK Applauds Inflation Reduction Act

August 30, 2022 — Lake Placid, NY — At a press event on Monday, ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) applauded Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his leadership in bringing the Inflation Reduction Act to pass. The $369 billion bill, which was signed earlier this month by President Biden, represents the largest investment into clean energy and climate action ever taken by the United States.

Speaking by the shore of Heart Lake, ADK and the Adirondack Council joined Majority Leader Schumer in touting the positive impact that the Inflation Reduction Act would have on Adirondack Park ecosystems and communities.

“It is fitting that we celebrate the largest climate action ever taken by the United States against the backdrop of the world’s most successful rewilding project: the Adirondack Park,” said Michael Barrett, ADK Executive Director, at the event. “These investments into renewable energies, vulnerable communities, and land conservation set the stage for a better future for every American, both in terms of a safer, healthier place to live and employment opportunities with a green economy.”

ADK also spoke to how the Forest Preserve, which constitutes the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, plays a critical role in addressing climate change.

“Today, the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves are the lungs of New York State. They combat climate change by providing oxygen and sequestering carbon. They protect critical habitat. They provide fresh drinking water to millions, including those living in New York City,” said Barrett. “And with a million residents and 25 million annual visitors, the Forest Preserve provides recreational opportunities that benefit both physical and mental health.”
