ADK Celebrates Bond Act Passage

November 9, 2022 — Lake Placid, NY — ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) applauds the recent passage of Proposition 1, the Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. Yesterday, New York voters passed the measure, paving the way for New York State to make an unprecedented $4.2 billion investment into the environment.

“ADK has proudly supported the Environmental Bond Act since its introduction in 2020. With its passage, we can now bring much needed support to the Adirondack and Catskill Parks by investing in local communities, land conservation, recreational infrastructure, and job growth,” said Michael Barrett, ADK Executive Director.

Bond Act funds will be used for infrastructure projects that will safeguard clean drinking water and increase climate resiliency, including replacing lead pipes, retrofitting buildings to be energy efficient, and upgrading roads and stream crossings. The Bond Act will also create and expand parks, campgrounds, and nature centers, which have been essential for so many New Yorkers. This includes protecting lakes and rivers and improving habitat for wildlife.

“With the passage of the Bond Act, New Yorkers have taken an important step toward building resilient communities for an increasingly unpredictable climate,” said Cathy Pedler, ADK Director of Advocacy. “We look forward to seeing this funding at work in the Adirondacks and Catskills, and in supporting sustainable recreation infrastructure that will help regional economies thrive.”
