ADK Applauds Creation of Adirondack, Catskill Park Coordinator Positions

ADK applauds the NYSDEC for creating two new coordinator positions for the Adirondack and Catskill Parks. The park coordinators will provide crucial leadership in both regions by evaluating and revising the NYSDEC’s Forest Preserve policies and procedures. This will include drawing from visitor data, community feedback, the Governor’s priorities, and Article XIV to inform future policies.

The appointment comes after the High Peaks Advisory Group (HPAG) sent a set of recommendations to Commissioner Basil Seggos in 2021, which included a suggested park coordinator position, and as the Catskill Advisory Group (CAG) prepares to make a similar request in its interim report. ADK has representatives on both advisory groups and pushed for the creation of these positions, among other important measures.

“ADK applauds the DEC for listening to and implementing guidance from local Adirondack and Catskill Park leaders,” said Michael Barrett, ADK Executive Director. “We look forward to working with the new park coordinators to improve Forest Preserve protections through education, sustainable trail work, and stewardship.”

“Not only is the NYSDEC demonstrating a real commitment to thinking comprehensively about the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, they’re also putting individuals in the positions who have the expertise needed,” said Cathy Pedler, ADK Director of Advocacy and CAG representative. “This is a big step forward for the Forest Preserve.”
