ADK Cycle Outing 2023

ADK Cycle Outing 2023

January 9, 2023

Registration Open Now, remains open until the program fills

Event Date: June 11-16

ADK Cycle Outing 2023 will be based out of Wadhams Hall near Ogdensburg, NY.  Wadhams Hall provides a convenient base to explore both sides of the St. Lawrence River from its Lake Ontario source through the Thousand Islands and down to the Eisenhower Locks and Moses-Saunders hydropower dam.

Many of the outing routes are described in the ADK e-book “Cycling Routes of the Saint Lawrence River Valley and Northern Adirondacks” by Tom Ortmeyer and John Barron. A complimentary copy of the guide will be provided to first-time ADK Cycle Outing Participants.

Routes in the book range from around 20 miles to 50 and more–some trips focus strictly on cycling, while others rides have time for relaxing and sightseeing in addition to riding. Many rides focus on the quiet town roads in lightly populated areas, with some portions on the broad paved shoulders of main highways. Several rides are across the river in southeastern Ontario (a passport or enhanced license is required for these). Note that all Covid-era restrictions for entry into Canada have been dropped (no need to reserve entry by CanVan and no “blue boxes”)

There will be a featured trip each day, of 25 to 40 miles, led by an outing leader. Cue sheets and maps will be provided for all rides. For some rides, a link to a GPS ride map will be available. As needed we may split into slow and moderate-paced groups. Participants may also choose to head out on their own or in a small group.

Cycle outing 2023 is based at Wadhams Hall, 6866 State Highway 37; Ogdensburg, NY. Some bicycling trips will depart directly from campus, others require a short drive to the departure point. We will gather in the lounge in late afternoon, to socialize, and then discuss the day’s rides, and plan a trip or trips for the next day. Wadhams Hall is about 2 miles upstream from Ogdensburg and provides convenient access to the Thousand Islands as well as the Ogdensburg Prescott International Bridge.

Wadhams Hall has many places to gather and meet as a group. There is a game room with foosball and a pool table, there is internet access. They also own over 1000 feet of riverfront on the St. Lawrence River across Rte. 37 from the Hall, for our group to take advantage of. There is plenty of room in the garages to store bicycles. Wadhams Hall is not air-conditioned. This should not be a factor with the outing being in mid-June and having the St. Lawrence River nearby.

Lodging: Wadhams Hall offers two lodging options—dorm rooms and suites. Suites have a bedroom with either a queen bed, king bed, or two twin beds. They have a separate sitting room, and a bathroom with shower. Dorm rooms have two single beds, with men’s and women’s bathrooms and shower rooms down the hall.

Bedding:  Bedding, blankets, and towels are provided.

Dining: Wadhams Hall has a sink, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, microwave and toaster oven available. Keep in mind that we all will share a single refrigerator—space will be limited. It is a good idea to bring blue freezer packs as well as a cooler for your room. The packs can be refrozen daily. Coffee and milk will be provided. There is some cookware available, but you may want to bring some of your own as well.

There are plenty of places to eat nearby. Some rides will include plans for breakfast or lunch en route. Most nights, we will organize a group dinner at a nearby restaurant for those interested.

Participants are responsible for providing bicycles, helmets (helmets are required on all rides) and transportation of the bikes. You may bring an E-bike (note that NY and Ontario laws differ on E-bikes). All bicycles will need bells and reflectors in Ontario.
