ADK to Host BioBlitz Event

ADK to Host BioBlitz Event

May 30, 2023 — Lake Placid, NY — ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) is excited to announce that it will be hosting a free BioBlitz event on June 24 at Cascade Welcome Center. Surrounded by 200 acres of forest and wetland, Cascade Welcome Center is home to a variety of ecosystems that have yet to be explored by naturalists. ADK is looking for volunteers of all ages and skill levels to help identify and document the property’s flora and fauna as a part of the event.

“Through this event, ADK is fostering a deeper connection between people and nature, while also gathering valuable data that will help us to protect and monitor the biodiversity around Cascade Welcome Center,” said Seth Jones, ADK Education Director. “We invite anyone with a passion for biodiversity to join us for the BioBlitz next month.”

A BioBlitz is an intensive, short-term event that brings together a group of volunteers to survey and identify as many species of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms as possible within a designated area. The goal of a BioBlitz is to document the biodiversity of an ecosystem and increase public awareness of the importance of preserving it.

During a BioBlitz, participants work with scientists and naturalists to explore the area, taking photos and recording observations of every living thing they encounter. The data collected during the event is then compiled and analyzed to create a comprehensive inventory of the area’s biodiversity. ADK will be using the information gathered during the event to both support educational programming that is delivered to visitors and to inform decision-making about the property’s usage.

This event was made possible in part thanks to support from Northern New York Audubon. To learn more about the BioBlitz and to register, please view the event listing below.
