ADK, LCPA Partner on Exhibit
August 8, 2023 — Lake Placid, NY — What do the Adirondacks and Downton Abbey have in common? You can find out at the Lake Placid Center for the Art’s (LCPA’s) newest exhibit, “Dressing the Abbey”.
The main exhibit presents a fashion history of the period surrounding World War I through bespoke costumes made for the characters of the popular drama series, Downton Abbey. A selection from the series’ wardrobe and accessories reflects on the changing times through fashion from 1912 to the mid-1920s, ranging from country tweeds and riding outfits; servants’ uniforms and footmen’s livery; to lavish evening attire crafted from sumptuous fabrics and decorated with intricate embroidery, lace, and beading.
Using archival materials provided by ADK, the LPCA designed an opening display that contextualizes early 20th century Great Britain against the rugged character of the Adirondacks of the same time period. The stark contrast between the ornate and lavish clothing of the Downton Abbey characters and the rougher, more utilitarian nature of the Adirondacks underscores the social and class themes that pervade the main exhibit.
You can learn more about the exhibit on the LPCA’s website.
