ADK Opens Accessible Campsites
ADK Opens Accessible Campsites
August 21, 2023 — Lake Placid, NY — As part of an initiative to improve accessibility at the Heart Lake Program Center, ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) has opened two accessible tenting sites in the Wilderness Campground. Built on compact stone surfaces, the tenting sites feature wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and fire rings. One of the sites also includes a 6-person canvas cabin with a ramp to the platform.
“Accessible tenting sites extend the benefits of nature to individuals of all abilities and stages of life. This work is emblematic of our century-long commitment to connecting people to New York’s public lands and waters,” said Michael Barrett, ADK Executive Director. “As we move forward, ADK will continue to transform the Heart Lake Program Center into a space that support every person in their outdoor endeavors.”
The opening of the new sites follows the completion of a re-design of the High Peaks Information Center in 2018, which included accessibility elements, and the construction of an ADA-accessible washhouse in 2019. Both facilities neighbor the new sites. The next phase of the project will focus on developing an accessible lean-to in the Wilderness Campground. Planning is also underway to build an accessible trail loop around Heart Lake, which will provide on-property recreation opportunities for visitors staying in these sites.
For availability and to book the sites, please contact ADK’s reservations staff at 518-523-3441 ext. 1.
