About The Program

Every winter, interested parties can sign up to care for a trail in the Adirondack Park and become responsible for its general maintenance. Trail Steward responsibilities include clearing drainages, removing blowdown, replacing trail markers and signage, and providing DEC’s Land Managers with conditions reports after each work visit.

  • Trail stewards must be at least 18 years of age

  • Groups are welcome to adopt a trail together

  • Available trails will be posted in the fall and will be up for adoption December 15–January 15

  • All new Trail Stewards are required to attend one in-person training day in the spring
