Richard Ross, PE, is a seasoned professional with over 45 years of distinguished service in the field of mechanical engineering. Born in Lyons, Wayne County, NY, Ross’s journey is a testament to dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.
Ross began his academic pursuit at Sodus Central High School before advancing to SUNY-Alfred, where he earned an Associate of Science in Engineering Science. His passion for engineering led him to the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. His academic achievements were further complemented by acquiring professional engineering licenses in Ohio and Massachusetts.
Throughout his career, Ross’s contributions have spanned various sectors, including automotive, prime mover, and water/wastewater industries. His expertise in reducing exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines and involvement with Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Technologies has been particularly noteworthy. Ross’s innovative spirit is evident in the several patents he holds for optical combustion sensors. Additionally, his extensive research and numerous papers on water treatment and rehabilitation have made significant impacts on the industry.
Ross’s professional journey is also marked by his active engagement with the engineering community. He has led customer focus group initiatives and presented at numerous industry conferences, including those organized by the Rural Water Associations in many states. His insights have also been shared at the American Water Works Association events across multiple states and the National Water Works Conference in Nevada.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ross is a dedicated community member. He has been an active participant in the ADK Black River Chapter, serving as the newsletter editor since 2017, advisory council representative from 2021–2023, and chairperson for the past five years. After retiring, Ross pursued and completed all three levels of the Outdoor Leadership program, reflecting his passion for environmental conservation and sustainable living.
Ross’s personal life is equally fulfilling. He is the proud father of two daughters, Lisa Lyn and Kara Lyn, and a grandfather to four grandchildren. His love for the Adirondacks led him to purchase over 30 acres of land, where he now enjoys the solitude of an off-grid cabin in Lewis County, NY.
