If you’re looking for one of the best beginner-friendly hikes in the Adirondacks, Mount Jo should be at the top of your list. Located on ADK’s Heart Lake property near Lake Placid, this short but rewarding hike delivers incredible views of the High Peaks without requiring an all-day commitment. At just over two miles round trip with approximately 700 feet of elevation gain, it’s the perfect introduction to Adirondack hiking.
Why Should I Hike Mount Jo?
Mount Jo proves that you don’t have to hike a High Peak to experience breathtaking scenery. From its open rocky summit, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Heart Lake and many of the Adirondacks’ most iconic mountains, including Algonquin Peak, Mount Colden, and Mount Marcy on a clear day. The trail offers a true Adirondack hiking experience, complete with rocky terrain, forested paths, and rewarding summit vistas.
Whether you’re hiking with family, introducing a friend to the outdoors, or looking for a shorter adventure before exploring the region, Mount Jo is an unforgettable destination.
Two Trails, One Great Summit
There are two routes to the summit:
- Short Trail: A steeper, more direct climb with rock scrambles that gains elevation quickly.
- Long Trail: A gentler ascent with a more gradual grade that’s ideal for newer hikers and families.
Many visitors choose to hike up one trail and return on the other, creating a scenic loop that showcases different parts of the mountain.
Come Prepared
Although Mount Jo is considered a beginner-friendly hike, it’s still a mountain trail. Expect uneven footing, exposed roots, rocks, and changing weather conditions. Parking lots at the Adirondack Mountain Club do have a daily fee for both members and non-members.
Before you head out:
- Wear sturdy hiking footwear with good traction.
- Bring water, snacks, and an extra layer, even on warm days.
- Check the forecast before your hike.
- Carry the Ten Essentials.
- Start early, especially on weekends and holidays when parking fills quickly.
Hike Responsibly
Every visit to Mount Jo is an opportunity to help protect the Adirondacks.
Stay on designated trails, even when they’re muddy, to prevent trail widening and erosion. Pack out everything you bring with you, respect wildlife, and follow the seven Leave No Trace Principles. Small actions by every visitor help preserve this special place for future generations.
